Skinny Lipper Shallow Running Saltwater Lure
When fish are feeding high, but a true topwater is too much, and a normal jerkbait runs too deep, the Skinny Lipper lives in the sweet spot between them.
The Skinny Lipper is a 4.1 inch shallow running lipped plug designed to dart just beneath the surface. Its approximately 0–14 inch running depth lets you cover skinny water, submerged grass, and shallow oyster edges without constantly digging the lure into the bottom.
It gives redfish, speckled trout, snook, and other inshore predators the flash, sound, and side to side action of a hard bait while keeping the lure high in the water column.
- 4.1 inch baitfish profile
- 0.46 oz body for efficient casts across open flats
- Runs approximately 0–14 inches deep
- Darting side to side subsurface action
- Internal rattle adds sound to the presentation
- Two premium 1/0 Hoss single inline hooks
- Hard body construction that bait stealers cannot easily tear apart
The Skinny Lipper is sold exclusively through Fish Strong; since you do not get the chance to handle one before buying, we offer 50% off your first one! Use code:

- Fish are feeding in the upper foot of the water column
- You need to cover a shallow grass flat or shoreline efficiently
- A normal diving jerkbait runs too deep
- You want a hard bait presentation instead of another soft plastic
- Fish are tracking bait just beneath the surface
What Makes the Skinny Lipper Different?
A topwater stays on top. A standard jerkbait commonly runs deeper. The Skinny Lipper is designed to work the skinny zone just beneath the surface.

Skinny Lipper vs. Topwater, Jerkbaits & Soft Plastics
| Lure Style | Where It Runs | Best Job | Main Consideration |
|---|---|---|---|
| True Topwater | On the surface | Surface commotion and visible strikes | Fish may follow or miss when they will not fully commit on top |
| Skinny Lipper | Approximately 0–14 inches deep | Searching skinny water just beneath the surface | Exposed hooks can still collect floating vegetation |
| Standard Saltwater Jerkbait | Model dependent, often deeper | Suspended fish and deeper twitch and pause presentations | Some models run too deep over very shallow grass |
| Weedless Soft Plastic | Controlled by hook weight and retrieve | Grass, cover and a more weedless presentation | Soft bodies can be damaged by bait stealers |

How to Fish the Skinny Lipper
Do not overcomplicate the retrieve. The lure already has a built in darting action. Your main job is controlling speed, depth and pause.
If the lure keeps touching grass or bottom, raise the rod tip or speed the retrieve up slightly. If fish follow without striking, try sharper twitches followed by a longer pause.
Where the Skinny Lipper Works Best
This shallow water fishing lure is most useful anywhere fish are feeding high enough that a deeper running plug would spend too much time touching grass or bottom.
- Shallow grass flats
- Oyster bars and oyster edges
- Shallow bays
- Creek mouths
- Points and current seams
- Shorelines with scattered bait
- Areas where baitfish are moving just beneath the surface
When Another Lure May Be Better
No lure is right for every situation. Choose a different setup when:
- Fish are holding well below the Skinny Lipper's running depth
- Thick floating grass is constantly collecting on exposed hooks
- You need a completely weedless presentation
- Fish are feeding tight to deeper bottom structure
For Redfish, Speckled Trout, Snook & More
The Skinny Lipper is designed for inshore predators that chase baitfish through shallow water.
That makes it a practical inshore fishing lure for redfish, speckled trout, snook and other saltwater predators feeding around shallow flats, oyster edges and shorelines.
Which Skinny Lipper Color Should You Use?
Start with depth and presentation. Color becomes the adjustment after you know the lure is reaching the fish.
That is a starting point, not a hard rule. Confidence, retrieve and location usually matter more than constantly changing colors.
